Effective Advertising: How to Attract New Business Opportunities

Your UPworld profile is the best way to market your skills and services online. But how do you make yourself stand out from the rest?

MediaPost released an article earlier this month entitled “Picking and Choosing What We Pay Attention To.” Everyday, we are bombarded by tons of advertising messages, all seeking to catch our attention. The key to winning our attention over is engagement, or breaking our “selective perception filter.” So how can your profile engage other UPworld members?

The answer is emotion. We seek to maximize positive emotions and minimize negative ones. Emotions shape our perceptions of experience and behavior. Thus, in completing your profile, you must keep this in mind and connect to your intended audience. How can a business relationship benefit both you and your prospective partner? A new business opportunity must seem attractive on both ends in order to draw attention.

Whether you would like to market your company, project, or event, reassure your reader that it will be a positive experience.

    Thanks for your comment, Jon!

    There are several aspects of the site that I think are essential for you to make the most of it. First is your PROFILE - you should definitely complete this with your work experience, educational background, skills, services, etc. Second is your PORTFOLIO - this acts to visually enhance your profile. Remember, most people have to see it to believe it, so go ahead and show off your work!

    Make sure you also use the site for browsing. Search for professionals in your area or in your line of work. Search for upcoming events. See if you are interested in any of the postings on the Marketplace. Also, make sure to invite your friends and colleagues to join UPworld. This way, you can keep in touch with contacts, both old and new.

    Hi Larry - Thanks for the comment! I would tell you that the first thing you need to do is complete your profile, but you’re a step ahead of me! Your profile looks great - it’s very informative and not at all overwhelming.

    So the next thing you should do is start reaching out to other professionals. You can browse by location (if you are interested in doing business with people in your area, or elsewhere), and you can browse by profession (if you are interested in building professional relationships with other bankers, or people from other industries as well). To search for people on UPworld, login and go to the People tab on the gray menu bar at the top of the page. Then select “By Industry” or “By Region”. If you see someone that you think would be a good business partner, be sure to send them a message.

    You may also want to create a posting that describes the services you offer. In order to do this, login and click on the Marketplace tab on the gray menu bar. The click on “Add New Posting” and fill out the form. The Marketplace is also a great way to find new business connections.

    Hi Nick - I’m very proud to tell you that the answer to your question is yes. We’ve had quite a number of success stories in which UPworld members have connected to one another and created new business deals.

    UPworld is a great place to connect to professionals from around the world across a variety of building-related industries. In the past, we’ve featured our success stories on our homepage. In fact, we encourage our members to share their stories, which we’ll gladly share to the rest of the UPworld community, either on our homepage or in our newsletter, which offers you more publicity!

    The best way to take advantage of UPworld is by taking the initiative and reaching out to our other members.
