elemental (elemental architecture llc and sine elemental llc) was formed to address issues of sustainable design, policy and education. elemental is founded on over three decades of experience in and commitment to energy conscious and environmentally responsible architecture, strategic planning and communication for innovative companies, both global and boutique, and locales.

In both lineage and philosophy, elemental architecture llc is directly linked to the Modern tradition that saw architecture as deriving much of its inspiration from the solutions to problems, both grand and pragmatic. Today, the question of a sustainable existence is perhaps the single most pressing issue facing the practice of architecture and, thus, a profound force shaping rational design. Buildings, in their construction and operation, consume well over one-third of all energy resources expended in the US. Planning decisions impact transportation options. Development strategies affect water collection and distribution.

Recognizing that environmental consciousness must exist in a climate that understands and supports its application and, conversely, that architecture has great power to communicate, elemental has recently added strategic positioning and communication design through the formation of sine elemental llc, identity and communication. The broad goal is to create the resource efficiency solutions that organizations now need to survive and flourish in an increasingly volatile business environment.

Although just three years old, sine has already received two major design awards as well as having been commissioned to create the identity for two important “green” projects in New York City. Similarly, elemental architecture continues the practice that received the National AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Award and is currently incorporating “green” design strategies to ground-up new buildings including a nineteen-story hotel and a fourteen-story mixed-use condominium as well as wrapping up the latest phase of the precedent-setting historic reconstruction of Shepard Hall at the City College of New York.
