The Architecture Foundation Australia is a not-for-profit association established with trustees - Glenn Murcutt, Richard Leplastrier, Peter Stutchbury and Lindsay Johnston. It has been established to offer educational and cultural activities to further the discipline of architecture and related fields.
The central activity is the annual two week Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class held in Australia each July and targeted at overseas professionals, postgraduates and senior students - which is proceeding to its eighth year. The New Zealand Master Class has grown from this concept, stimulated by recommendations by previous New Zealand participants on the International Master Class.
The New Zealand Master Classes, held at Awaroa in September 2005, 2006 and 2007, have been described as ‘wonderful’, and it is planned to have a fourth six day residential New Zealand Master Class in September 2008 for practising architects, academics and graduates to be held again at the Athfield designed Awaroa Lodge in the magnificent Abel Tasman National Park in the NE of the south island of New Zealand.
The program will consist of a design studio led by Ian Athfield, Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury. It will be supplemented by lectures by each of the tutors and a visit to Athfield's amazing Awaroa House nearby.
Ian Athfield is one of New Zealand's most highly respected architects, was recipient of the 2004 NZIA Gold Medal and is currently NZIA President. Richard Leplastrier is a seminal figure in Australian architecture and an outstanding teacher and he was recipient of the RAIA Gold Medal in 1999 and, in 2004, the prestigious Finnish 'Spirit of Nature, Wood Architecture Award' previously awarded to Renzo Piano and Kengo Kuma. Peter Stutchbury has been recipient of numerous architecture awards including, in 2003, both the RAIA Sir Zelman Cowan Award for Public Buildings, with Richard Leplastrier, and the Robin Boyd Award for Residential Buildings. In 2005 he again received the Robin Boyd Award and a National Award for Commercial Buildings . Lindsay Johnston, former Dean of Architecture, Building and Design at Newcastle is the Master Class Convener.
