This course presents a value system for selecting environmentally preferable products. You learn where to find green building materials and how to ensure the most non-toxic application. You learn about life-cycle analysis, cost, sourcing, energy efficiency, off-gassing, green specifications, value engineering, and third-party certifications. Activities include guest speakers, case studies, and field trips to local showrooms. You analyze award-winning environmental design and learn how to apply the triple-bottom-line approach to materials selection.
PIPER KUJAC, B.A., is a LEED-accredited designer with 10 years of professional experience in architecture. She has worked on numerous sustainable building projects and knows the ins and outs of green building, from choosing materials and systems to finding creative ways to keep them in the project when budgets become tight. Kujac is a past chair of the U.S. Green Building Council's Emerging Green Builders and current chair of the Residential Green Building Advocacy Committee. She has taught LEED prep courses at AIA and IIDA and is a contributing writer to www.Inhabitat.com and www.GreenHomeGuide.com.
